Exports of Aluminum Sheets Post Explosive Rise of 48 percent in August

Surpassing domestic sales in 23 months. Boosted by brisk exports, the monthly sales by domestic aluminum sheet makers sharply increased in August compared with the same month of the previous year. Meanwhile, domestic sales have continued to in a slump, making the monthly exports in August unusually surpass domestic sales in 23 months. The combined monthly sales by three major domestic aluminum sheet makers were tallied at 39,807 tons in August, up 17.0 percent from 34,103 tons in the like month of 2002. Of those sales, domestic sales slid 4.6 percent year-on-year to 19,150 tons from 20,064 tons, while exports jumped to 20,657 tons from 13,949 tons, outpacing the domestic sales. It was the first time in 23 months since September 2001 that the monthly overseas sales performance exceeded domestic sales record. Such an explosive rise in overseas sales was seen not only in Asia including China and other Southeastern countries, but also in the U.S.
