Posting 67,000 tons with a 35 percent jump from a year ago in August with a year-on-year soar of 14 percent in the January-August period. Despite sluggishness in domestic sales, exports of prepainted steel sheets are still extending a bullish trend. Particularly, the monthly exports in August were found to have surged more than 35 percent on a year-on-year basis. Combined sales performance by domestic prepainted steel sheet makers in August reached 151,700 tons, up 7.1 percent from the corresponding month of 2002, but down 1.2 percent from July. Most outstanding characteristic in the sales of prepainted steel sheets this year is a continuing downward trend in the domestic market. In August, domestic sales posted 84,500 tons, down 8.1 percent from a year ago and a drop of 0.6 percent from a month earlier. The arrivals of a summer rainy season and a seasonal vacation period in tandem plus somewhat slow construction of domestic plants dragged down the monthly sales in August compared with the same month of 2002 when domestic sales posted a sharp rise.
