摘要

Every year in the UK, about 1000 children are born as a result of treatment with donated eggs, sperm, or embryos. Until 1991, the industry was unregulated. Donations were anonymous and clinics under no obligation to keep records. In 1990-the same year in which scientists at Berkeley University discovered the so-called breast cancer gene-the UK Parliament passed legislation establishing a national system of record keeping. Donors would still have their anonymity preserved, but offspring could be provided with non-identifying information about their genetic parent.
