Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) belongs to a family of glycoproteins that include VEGFB, VEGFC, VEGFD, VEGFE, and placental growth factor. VEGF has been recognised as the most important stimulus for angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is an important step for the growth and progression of cancers. In adulthood, angiogenesis is seen during menstrual cycles in the endometrial tissue and ovaries, and during the wound-healing process.
