Elisabetta Rapiti and colleagues used the Geneva Cancer Registry to obtain records of all cases of cancer diagnosed in Geneva since 1970. From the registry, 300 patients with metastatic breast cancer (stage IV) at diagnosis were selected for the study.Risk of death from breast cancer was found to be 40% less in patients undergoing surgery of the primary tumour with negative surgical margins than in those who did not undergo surgery (hazard ratio 0-6 [95% Cl 0-4-1]).
