Conformal radiotherapy Patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC; single nodules) not amenable to resection or radio-frequency ablation could benefit from a combination of conformal radiotherapy (CRT) and transarterial chemo-embolisation (TACE), according to a study reported by Phillippe Merle (Lyon, France) and colleagues. On day 1 of this phase 2, single arm study, patients were given TACE (cisplatin or liposomal doxorubicin), and on day 7 they received CRT (3 Gy per day, five fractions per week to a total dose of 45-54 Gy). Of the 22 patients thus far enrolled, 17 had a complete response, and five had a partial response according to European Society for Study of the Liver (EASL) criteria. The main treatment-related toxicity was a worsening of liver function.
