摘要

50% of 11 common cancer types are potentially avoidable, according to a study of excess cancers in Europe. Lead author Isabelle Soerjomataram (Erasmus University Medical Centre, Netherlands) says her team calculated this percentage after aiming to establish numbers of avoidable cancers in 28 European countries by use of cancer incidence data. 11 cancers, for which moderate to large proportions of cases are known to be attributable to external risk factors, were included. Assuming little or no difference in genetic susceptibility to these cancers between countries, the researchers defined a minimum achievable rate of cancer incidence by aggregating 2002 data from the three countries with the lowest site-specific rates for four age groups. They then compared actual incidences with this baseline rate to calculate the number of excess cancer cases.
