Helicobacter pylori and prognosis of gastric carcinoma

Stomach cancer causes about 10% of all deaths from cancer worldwide. Epidemiological, clinicopathological, and animal studies give evidence for the importance of H-pylori infection in the aetiology of non-cardia gastric cancer. Seropositivity for H pylori is associated with up to 30-times increased risk of distal gastric cancer, and prospective studies showed that bacterial eradication substantially decreases incidence of this disease, especially in patients that had not developed premalignant lesions until treatment.
