On treating metabolic syndrome: emphasise lifestyle change.

We agree with de Haas and colleagues1 that the modification of risk factors by lifestyle changes has an important role in the management of the metabolic syndrome in cancer survivors. However, evidence indicates that some of the drugs used to treat the metabolic syndrome in this population might have unintended consequences.Some of the drugs used to control hyperglycaemia in the metabolic syndrome might actually promote tumour growth. Recent observational data suggest that the long-acting insulin analogue, insulin glargine, is mitogenic in humans,2 possibly because of its increased affinity for the insulin growth factor-1 receptor.
