A new ultrasound technique-elasticity imaging-can accurately establish whether a breast lesion is benign or malignant, and reduce the number of breast biopsies, a US study suggests. "In the US, 1.4 million breast biopsies are performed annually with 80% of lesions being benign", says lead researcher Richard Barr (Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, OH, USA), who presented the study on Nov 27, 2006, at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, held in Chicago, IL, USA.
