The U.S. Department of the Interior's Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM), has completed its evaluation of Carlson Software's Natural Regrade fluvial geomorphic landform design and identified it as "TIPS (Technical Innovation and Professional Services) core software" for mine reclamation design and review use. The OSM began evaluating the GeoFluv~(TM) approach to stable landform design in 2000. The GeoFluv~(TM) approach uses fluvial geomorphic principles to design stable landforms, essentially designing the land-form that would naturally form on the disturbed site over thousands of years. They have studied the approach, have visited reclamation sites using it during and after construction, and they have seen how the completed landforms have performed over many years. In 2004, OSM awarded 'National' and 'Best of the Best' reclamation awards to projects designed using this innovative approach. The GeoFluv~(TM) approach is the heart of Carlson Software's Natural Regrade design software (patent pending).
