While the first cases of influenza A H1N1 were being reported by authorities and traditional media, the news was already being tweeted, blogged, and shared across the world through social media. Twitter and social networking sites such as Facebook, together with podcasts, blogs, widgets, and RSS feeds now allow public health news and information and advice to spread rapidly, alongside comment, speculation, and misinformation.
