IVlale-to-female (MTF) transgender women are at risk for a number of health disparities, including HIV infection. Although HIV infection is a major health concern for the population of MTF transgender persons, the exact prevalence of HIV infection is difficult to ascertain. One major reason is that HIV surveillance systems may not accurately capture the number of transgender persons because many transgender persons are included in the men who have sex with men (MSM) data (Sausa, Sevelius, Keatley, Iniguez, & Reyes, 2008).
