Inpatient Consultative Dermatology

Skin disorders occur in one-third of inpatients, and dermatologists play a significant role in their diagnosis and management. Although there remain barriers, there are substantial benefits to involving dermatology, including opportunities for more extensive interaction and teaching with consulting services. A broad range of dermatoses are diagnosed in the inpatient setting, including drug eruptions, atypical or disseminated infections, and unusual causes of cutaneous ulcers. Eruptions occurring in immuno-suppressed patients, in particular, can pose particular challenges. Dermatologists can aid in diagnosis with physical examination and judicious use of skin biopsies.
