A direct derivation of the Catalan formula

This procedure sounds very involved when described formally, but it is actually very easy to carry out. What is being done, effectively, is cycling the pattern of upstrokes and downstrokes in a mountain profile in a careful manner so as to create 'equivalent' profiles. Each profile then becomes associated with n others in an equivalence class, and each equivalence class contains exactly one valid mountain profile.
