I. INTRODUCTION: The 7th International Conference on the Tear Film & Ocular Surface: Basic Science and Clinical Rele- vance, arranged by the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) and held in Taormina, Sicily, September 18-22, 2013, was attended by delegates from 41 countries. The purpose of the conference, as outlined in the opening remarks of Dr. Shigeru Kinoshita, was to: 1. Assess the current knowledge and "state-of-the-art" research on the structure and function of tear film-producing tissues, tears, and the ocular surface in health and disease.
