Promotion and retention are critical components of a professional career. Similarly, recruitment incentives are a vital facet of employee-friendly organizations. Administrators at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio, recognized this and implemented an Advanced Practice Nurse Promotional Program (APPP) to serve these important ideals. The goals of the APPP were to establish an appraisal tool and pro-motional process akin to a clinical advancement ladder for certified clinical nurse specialists and NPs.The APPP is based on a clinical model that incorporates advanced levels of skills in the following practice categories: clinical practice and outcomes; clinical education/academics; publication; invited presentations; research; recognition and leadership; community service; and administrative support.
