10 Years in History

Ten years ago, members of the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSA1) had a dream fulfilled, the start of an incredible journey leading to the development of its first ever ISSM-owned journal, The Journal of Sexual Medicine {JSM). THIS WAS AN AMAZING EVENT IN ISSM HISTORY!!! The ISSM had been in agreement with another publisher for many years. I was interviewed for the editor-in-chief position of the previous journal in the fall of 2001, at the ISSM meeting in Milan, Italy, literally just a few weeks after the infamous September 11, 2001 incidents in the United States. I started as the editor-in-chief of that previous journal in 2002. From the beginning, the editorial team and editorial board had tried unsuccessfully to expand the journal scope and size to encompass the broader context of male and female sexual medicine rather than the limited role of male impotence that its title would suggest. There were numerous problems communicating with the publisher as all discussions had to be funneled through one individual. She communicated to others at the publisher only that which she felt appropriate. The relationship between the publisher and the ISSM progressively deteriorated from the beginning of 2002 until the'end of 2003. All of us on the editorial board were constantly amazed at the inappropriate way we were treated.
