'Good for You TV': using storyboarding for health-related television public service announcements to analyze messages and influence positive health choices.

Many external and societal factors influence health choices and behaviors, including health-related media messages. What people, especially youth, see and hear in health-related media messages often influences their overall health. The interpretation of images and messages can be a contributing factor to health problems such as violence, substance abuse, poor nutrition and body image, and risky sexual behavior. Students, highly vulnerable to such messages, need opportunities to become media literate to reduce the effects of unhealthy messages.Media literacy involves experiencing the media message, using critical thinking skills to analyze the message, and producing print and electronic media messages. After viewing and experiencing a health message, the well-informed student can deconstruct the message to become a more active consumer of the media message. The media-literate student understands that media messages are specifically created to promote a particular point of view. In order for students to critically judge health-related media messages and to make healthier choices, more media literacy education needs to be incorporated into health education.
