Opinions of Illinois voters about coordinated school health programs.

A random-digit dialed telephone survey was conducted in Illinois to determine support for coordinated school health programs (CSHP). Survey data were obtained from 469 registered voters in June and July 2000. Results demonstrated that most Illinois registered voters: 1) supported the concept and practice of CSHP; 2) were uncertain if current school health education and services were adequate; 3) believed Illinois schools should set a goal of creating a "healthier state;" and 4) although supportive of concept, were not familiar with term CSHP. Characteristics of supportive and nonsupportive registered voters are reported. Results of this study may assist in developing educational and marketing strategies to build support for coordinated school health programs in Illinois.
