Lucerne (Medicago sativa) and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) were macerated (200 g + 1 litre water) using a blender and filtered through cheese cloth. Both filtrates were kept anaerobically at 30鳦 for 2 days (previously fermented juice, PFJ)with 0 or 2% sucrose added; only lucerne PFJ with sucrose and ryegrass PFJ without sucrose were used as silage additives. Lucerne and ryegrass at the vegetative stage were harvested, chopped and treated with water, lucerne PFJ or ryegrass PFJ 2.5 ml/kgbefore ensiling for 45 days at 25? Addition of PFJ caused a slight but significant increase in acetic acid and ammonia content of lucerne silage. Ryegrass PFJ was more effective than lucerne PFJ in enhancing lactic acid fermentation and reducing proteolytic activity in ryegrass silage. It is suggested that PFJ from the same plant is more effective as a silage additive.
