Concerns for the future of urological research.

摘要

The specialty of urology has benefited immensely over the years from a strong research program which has delivered products varying from prostate specific antigen to minimally invasive renal and prostate surgery to lithotripsy to hormone ablation therapy for prostate cancer. These benefits have been accrued through a long tradition of excellence in research. A host of talented surgeon-scientists continue to provide significant advances in urological care which benefit patients, practicing physicians and the scientific community alike. In the past most surgeon-scientists were introduced to research experience in their residency, and then sought an academic position with substantial protected time and departmental support to focus on developing a research program. Many of these individuals received American Foundation for Urologic Research scholarships, Career Development Awards and subsequently ROls, and have been NIH funded scientists for many years.
