A technique to transfer screw-retained angled abutments before inserting a definitive prosthesis.

Angled abutments are used occasionally to correct misaligned implants or the location of the access opening for the prosthetic retaining screw. After the restoration is fabricated, a transfer aid is helpful to maintain the orientation of angled abutments on the definitive cast to the implants intraorally, especially if more than 1 angled abutment is used. Difficulty in maintaining the orientation increases when an angled abutment can be seated on the implant in multiple positions. For example, a Branemark system (Nobel Biocare, Goteborg, Sweden) multi-unit angled abutment can be seated around the implant hex in 12 different rotational positions, whereas only 3 positions are allowed for a similar abutment of the Replace system (Nobel Biocare). Transfer aids for multi-unit angled abutments (Branemark system; Nobel Biocare) are not commercially available and are difficult to fabricate for short, conically shaped abutments. A simple technique for the accurate transfer of multiple angled abutments from the definite cast to the implants intraorally is presented.
