Rational Synthesis of Tripyrranes

The rational, chromatography-free synthesis of two regioi-someric 5,10-diaryltripyrranes from pyrrole and aromaticacids has been developed. The strategy is general andshould be applicable to a broad range of acids. Thismethodology was successfully applied to the synthesis ofmonoprotected dipyrrane. The oxidation of N,N'-bis-me-syltripyrrane under basic conditions led to the formation ofboth known tripyrrin- 1 -one and unknown 1-methoxytri-pyrrin-a fluorescent dye strongly absorbing green light.
