First total synthesis of (+)-varitriol

[GRAPHICS] A highly stereoselective total synthesis of (+)-varitriol, an antitumor natural product, has been achieved for the first time from commercially available methyl alpha,D-mannopyranoside and 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid.
