Fungi have long been regarded as rich sources of novel bioactive natural products. The 20th century has witnessed the discovery, isolation, and chemical characterization of a vast diversity of natural products from fungi [1]. Endophytic fungi serve as typical examples of special-habitat fungi by residing in the inner tissue of the plants and maintaining a state of balanced antagonism with the hosts. During the past two decades, endophytic fungi have been proved to be an untapped source of new bioactive natural products since a large number of natural products with novel structures and interesting biological activities was reported [2-4]. As part of our ongoing studies on endophytic fungi from Huperzia serrata [5-9], one strain Peyronellaea sp. XW-12 was characterized and subjected to chemical investigation. The fungus was cultured in 12 Erlenmeyer flasks (500 mL) containing solid-state medium (rice 80 g, distilled water 100 mL, each; soak overnight before autoclaving) at 28℃ for 30 days.
