A novel method of functionalized polymer grafting onto nanographite using cyanuric chloride and allyl amine is reported. The polymer-grafted nanographite was characterized in depth using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis (CHN), thermo-gravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. This polymer-grafted nanographite was used for the solid-phase extraction of trace enrofloxacin in biological fluids and pharmaceutical samples. The profile of enrofloxacin uptake by the polymer-grafted nanographite reflected the high accessibility of the interaction sites in the polymer. The sorption capacity of the polymer-grafted nanographite was 24.4 mu mol g(-1) at the identified optimum pH of 6 and at 20 degrees C, according to Scatchard analysis. The equilibrium adsorption data for enrofloxacin on grafted nanographite were analyzed using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Redlich-Peterson models. Recoveries of 68.5, 91.6, and 81.2 % were obtained in the extraction of trace enrofloxacin in human serum, urine, and pharmaceutical samples, respectively. The calibration curves were linear (R-2 >= 0.997) in the concentration range 0.1-60 mu g mL(-1) for enrofloxacin. The limit of detection for enrofloxacin was 8.5 ng mL(-1).
