A solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coated with a novel gamma-Al2O3 cociting has been prepared and used to screen gaseous samples for traces of volatile organic compounds (VOC). The adsorption and desorption characteristics of the new porous layer have been investigated. Results show that it has good thermal stability (to 350 degreesC), high extraction capacity, a long life-span, and good selectivity for alkanes and esters. Defection limits for VOC in a gaseous matrix, for extraction with the gamma-Al2O3-coated fiber then analysis by GC-FID, were less than 0.714 ng L-1.
