Recently, our understanding of psoriasis has expanded from a superficial skin disease to a systemic inflammatory process that affects multiple organs. It has been postulated that circulating high levels of pro-inflammatory cyto-kines may predispose psoriasis patients to serious comorbid conditions such as atherosclerosis, psoriatic arthritis, obesity, and diabetes (Davidovici et ai, 2010). However, the mechanistic link between increased circulating cytokine levels and these comorbid conditions remains to be established.
