Following the launch last November of the first revision of the UK Woodland Assurance Standard, Peter Wilson reflects on the setting up of the standard and its achievements over the past seven years. The UK Woodland Assurance Standard (UKWAS) is now accepted as just another 'part of the furniture' in the UK forestry sector but its launch in 1999 was a watershed event for UK forestry representing a unique coming together of organisations with an interest in sustainable forestry. The launch of the first revision of UKWAS ensured that 2006 was another landmark year for the UKWAS partnership. The second edition was presented to woodland managers and stakeholders at a ceremony in London' in November and at the same time the UKWAS partners made a pledge to work together to try and make the standard more user-friendly for managers of small woodlands.
