Social or Anti-social Forestry?Evaluating approaches for woodland working groups

John Bell and Roger Cutting examine the structures and economic operation of community woodland co-operatives.social forestry' has for a number of years been a useful term of choice for describing woodland working groups, often organised as co-operatives, to provide members with access to logs at discounted rates in what has also been called a 'logs for labour'arrangement. A national survey carried out in December 2013 identified 60 woodland social enterprise groups fulfilling these criteria (Swade et al., 2013). Work completed more recently by Forest Research identified 650 community working groups across theUK, of which 300 were found in England, 200 in Scotland and 150 Wales (Ambrose-Oji, 2013). Furthermore, work carried out by Forest Research indicates a 67% increase in numbers of community woodland groups in the last five years (Edwards et. al., 2009; Stewart and Edwards, 2013).
