FLAVONOIDS FROM Artemisia sphaerocephala AND THEIR FREE RADICAL SCAVENGING ACTIVITY USING DPPH

Artemisia sphaerocephala belongs to the family Compositae (Asteraceae) and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for parotitis, tonsillitis, turgescence, and tumefaction [1]. Previous investigation on this species reported the analysis of the essential oil of the plant determined by means of CGC/MS/DS [2]. In our previous work, we isolated and identified two new phenolic compounds, together with a new and a known triterpenoid saponin from the ethanol extract of the whole plant of A. sphaerocephala [3, 4]. However, compounds of the different classes were not well separated from the plant. In continuation of our study, we isolated five flavonoids from this plant for the first time. The free radical scavenging activity of these compounds was investigated using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay.
