Chemical composition and biological activities of Jeju Thymus quinquecostatus essential oils against Propionibacterium species inducing acne

The genus Propionibacterium includes common Gram-positive, non-spore forming, microaerophilic and rod-shaped bacteria. These organisms are classified as classical and cutaneous propionibacteria. Classical propionibacteria are used to make dairy foods and to produce vitamin B_(12), tetra pyrolle compounds, and propionic acids. Members of the cutaneous propionibacteria include P. acnes, P. granulosum and P. propionicum (Cheong et al., 2008; Kiatpapan and Murooka, 2002). Among them, P. acnes and P. granulosum can cause several infections such as acne vulgaris, chronic endophthalmitis and uveitis (Cheong et al., 2008; Csukas et al., 2004). Acne vulgaris is the most common cutaneous disorder. P. acnes produces a number of virulence factors and is well known for its inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties (Kim, 2005; Perry and Lambert, 2006). The main components of the pilosebaceous unit of the skin, such askeratinocytes and sebocytes, can be activated by P. acnes, leading to the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (Bojar and Holland, 2004; Farrar and Ingham, 2004; Jain and Basal, 2004).
