Letter regarding: 'Improving acetabular cup orientation in total hip arthroplasty by using smartphone technology'

We read with great interest the article "Improving Acetabular Cup Orientation in Total Hip Arthroplasty by Using Smartphone Technology" by Peters et al (J Arthroplasty, 2012;27:1324-1330). We agree that proper cup position has a direct influence on both short- and long-term outcome in total hip arthroplasty. The technique presented in this study aids the surgeon in improving the accuracy of cup positioning without complicating the operation.The authors found this method reliable, especially for acetabular cup inclination [1].From their data it is not clear what the mean anteversion angle was in this cohort, but they state that their method was not as accurate in assessing anteversion. We believe that this difference could be explained by the difference between the anteversion measured with this technique intraoperatively and the radiographic anteversion.
