Hidradenitis suppurativa and multiple dermatofibromas in a patient with ulcerative colitis

A 40-year-old woman with obesity complained of recurrent abscesses in the groin areas. She had been diagnosed as having ulcerative colitis (UC) 20 years prior, and suffering from the inguinal lesions since the next year. She had been treated with oral prednisolone for nearly 20 years, and the dose was esca-lated (to a maximum of 40 mg/day) or tapered according to UC activity. She was taking 5 mg/day at the initial visit to us. Physical examination showed multiple subcutaneous abscesses with spontaneous drainage of pus, subcutaneous indurations and scars in bilateral inguinal areas (Fig. 1a). but neither axillae nor buttocks were involved. Bacterial cultures yielded Streptococcus anginosus.
