Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a frequently performed orthopedic procedure in patients with degenerative joint disease. Vascular complications after TKA are rare and acute arterial injury or limb ischemia occurs between 0.03% and G.17%.1' 2 Vascular complications are most often associated with tourniquet use, causing indirect vessel injury with thrombosis, especially in patients with coexisting artheriosclerosis.3 The popliteal artery crosses the knee joint in close relation to the posterior capsule which makes it susceptible to injury during knee surgery.4 Early recognition of a popliteal artery injury is of importance as the outcome can be devastating, with potential limb loss.
