KARYOTYPIC STUDIES IN SOME MEMBERS OF LILIACEAE

Karyotypic studies were made in 12 species viz., Allium cepa (2n = 16), Aloe barbadensis (2n = 14), Chlorophytum tuberosum (2n = 16), Chlorophytum borivilianum (2n = 28), Crinum asiaticum (2n = 22), Crinum latifolium (2n = 44), Gloriosa superba (2n =22), Haworthia limifolia (2n = 28), Haemanthus multiflorus (2n = 18), Ophiopogon japonicus (2n = 36), Scilla hyacinthina (2n = 26) and Urginea indica (2n = 20). The longest chromosomes were found in H. multiflorus (12.8 um) and shortest in S. hyacinthina(0.5 um). Out of 12 species, 8 species such as, Allium cepa, Chlorophytum tuberosum, C. borivilianum, Crinum asiaticum, C. latifolium, G. superba, and O. japonicus had symmetrical karyotypes and remaining 4 viz., Aloe barbadensis, Hawarthia limifolia, Haemanthus multiflorus, S. hyacinthina and U. indica have asymmetrical karyotypes.
