Antibiotics and asthma treatment

In a perspective article, Johnston1 makes an important point that atypical bacterial infections are possibly related to acute asthma exacerbations and severe asthma and hypothesizes that ketolide and macrolide antibiotics might be beneficial in these asthma phenotypes. One study prominently represented in this perspective article is the Telithromycin, Chlamydophila, and Asthma trial (TELI-CAST) study, in which 10 days of treatment with telithromycin was reported to have a beneficial effect in acute asthma exacerbation.
