Bis (2,6-dibromo-4-phenylphenyl) carbene dimerize to give tetrakis (2,6-dibromo-4-phenylphenyl) ethene, which is further photolyzed to afford 1,8-dibromo-9,10-bis (2,6-dibromo-4-phenylphenyl)-3,6-diphenylphenanthrene.
