Effect of Aflatoxin B1 on immunity to Newcastle disease in commercial broilers.

Mouldy rice was incorporated into the diets of 6 groups of broiler chicks to give 0 (controls) and 0.1-0.5 mg/kg of aflatoxin B1, and the possible immunosuppressive effect of the mycotoxin was assessed by haemagglutination inhibition tests on serumsamples taken from the chicks 5, 27, 42 and 56 days after vaccination with a Newcastle disease vaccine. A dose-related depressive effect of the aflatoxin on the level of immunity and the weight of the bursa fabricii was found.
