Paralytic Ileus Due to Advanced Pregnancy in a Cow-A Case Report

Paralytic ileus is common in cows in advanced or last trimester of pregnancy. A Holstein Friesian crossbred dairy cow in 8 months of pregnancy was brought with history of not passing dung. On clinical examination bilateral distension of abdomen, hard rumen consistency were evident and rectal examination revealed blackish red coloured mucus coated dung. The animal was treated with magnesium sulphate and sodium chloride as purgative orally along with intravenous administration of fluids. The cow had uneventful recovery following treatment.
