The in vitro adhesion indices of Salmonella gallinarum to caudal ileal and caecal epithelial cells of chicken was studied at pH 7.2. Adhesion indices were calculated from the smears of incubated mixtures after staining with Giemsa's stain. The results indicated that the adhesion indices differed significantly (P<0.01) between treated and untreated groups. The mean adhesion index of salmonella to isolated caudal ileal epithelial cell in PBS was 7.438+-0.0987, while in lactobacilli culture filtrate, the adhesion index was 2.755+-0.073. Like wise, with cultured caecal epithelial cells in PBS, the adhesion index was 7.528+-0.11 where as the index was 2.602+-0.07 in lactobacilli culture filtrate. This decrease in the adhesion index with lactobacilli culture filtrate could be attributed to the anti-microbial activity of lactobacilli metabolites present in the culture filtrate.
