Effect of genetic and non-genetic factors on production performance of crossbred cattle

Performance records of 264 crossbred cows (Jersey, Holstein or Danish Red crossed with Red Sindhi, Hallikar or Amritmahal) maintained at a research station in Bangalore, India, between~1967 to 1991 were analysed. The highest 305-day milk yield wasfound for Holstein X Red Sindhi cows (2236-2344 kg) and the lowest for Jersey X Hallikar cows (1678-1779 kg). Lactation duration was greater for Holstein crosses than Jersey crosses (346-374 vs. 332-359 days) and Danish Red crosses(335 days). Milk yieldand lactation duration were lower in the summer than in the winter and monsoon seasons (P<0.05). Lactation milk yield decreased over the years (P<0.05) but lactation duration varied over the 4 six-year periods (P<0.05).
