Atropine-xylazine-ketamine as balanced anaesthesia for canines - a clinical study.

22 dogs weighing 5 to 25 kg undergoing various surgical operations were anaesthetised with a combination of atropine, xylazine and ketamine. All dogs were premedicated with atropine sulfate at 0.04 mg/kg s.c. 20 min before i.m. administration of xylazine at 1 to 2 mg/kg and ketamine at 5 to 10 mg/kg. The onset of anaesthesia occurred within 5 to 10 min and recovery within 60 to 90 min of xylazine and ketamine administration. Heart rate increased from 92.42±3.32 before anaesthesia to 118.23±5.30 beats/min during anaesthesia. There were no changes in respiration rate, rectal temperature or blood chemistry parameters. It is concluded that the combination of atropine, xylazine and ketamine is safe for anaesthetising dogs for surgery.
