EFFECT OF BODY WEIGHT GAIN OR LOSS ON ECONOMIC TRAITS IN LACTATING MURRAH BUFFALOES

The variation of body weight gain/ loss during lactation in relation to parity and its effect on various economic traits was studied in Murrah buffaloes and the results reported. A total of 119 Murrah buffaloes (parities 1 to 6) at the Progeny TestingUnit, Banavasi, Andhra Pradesh were involved in the study. The body weights (BW) recorded at fortnightly intervals till 6 months of calving over a period of 13 years (1980 to 1992) were analysed to study the variation and the effect of BW gain/loss on peak yield (PY), days to reach peak yield (DPY), cumulative milk yields of first 3 months (MY-3), 6 months (MY-6) and total lactation (LMY), lactation length (LL), service period (SP), dry period (DP) and calving interval (Cl). Feeding and managemental conditions were uniform throughout the period of study. Statistical analyses were done as per Snedecor and Cochran (1967).
