COMPOSITION OF JAGGERY FILTER CAKE AND ITS ACCEPTABILITY IN PIG FEEDING

In the sugarcane belt, pig farmers often feed Jaggery filter cake (scum or maili) obtained from kolhu or jaggery plants. Feeding such high energy unconventional source will not only help in fast growth but also reduce the cost of production, RecentlySuma et al., (2007) utilized sugarcane press residue / filter cake for poultry feeding. However, information on Jaggery filter cake (JFC) composition, quantity to be fed and feeding frequencies are not available in the literature. Therefore, an effort was made to document the traditional practice followed by pig farmers to use JFC as seasonal feed and to evaluate proximate analysis of Jaggery filter cake obtained from different sources.
