HF RFID versus UHF RFID Technology for Library Service Transformation at City University of Hong Kong

Since libraries first used RFID systems in thelate 1990's, more and more libraries haveidentified the advantages of the technology.With advances in HF and UHF RFID, bothalternatives are now viable in libraryapplications. While some librarians are stillskeptical towards UHF RFID as unproven inthe library arena, the City University ofHong Kong implemented two pilot tests ofthe technologies. The Library formulated aset of criteria to evaluate UHF RFID againstHF RFID as a possible library servicetransformation tool. This is to ensure thatthe selection of UHF or HF RFID is a rationalone that is based on objective observationand analysis. The article providesbackground on the service transformationneeds at the Library of the City University ofHong Kong. It reviews the use of HF RFID inthe library arena and presents the latestdevelopment of UHF RFID. Results of thetwo pilot tests and how theUniversity Library evaluated the twotechnologies are covered.
