Management of Lower Extremity Peripheral Arterial Disease: Interpreting the Latest Guidelines for Nurse Practitioners

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) presents in many clinical forms, many of which are co-existent and asymptomatic. Early recognition of the clinical manifestations of PAD and use of guideline-directed medical therapy will help improve the quality of care for these patients. This article reviews the latest evidence-based guidelines published by the American College of Cardiology Foundation/American Heart Association for managing lower extremity PAD. Implications for nurse practitioner practice are discussed. This knowledge will lead to earlier identification of patients with PAD, improved quality of life, and continuity of care for patients with lower extremity arterial disease.
