Multiple resistance sources for rusts, powdery mildew and loose smut in wheat multilocation evaluation.

A total of 300 wheat genotypes were grown in Palampur (powdery mildew, Erysiphe graminis f.sp. tritici, and loose smut, Ustilago nuda var. tritici [Ustilago nuda f.sp. tritici]) and Malan (leaf rust, Puccinia recondita tritici [Puccinia hordei] and stripe rust, Puccinia striiformis [Puccinia striiformis var. striiformis]), Himachal Pradesh, India, to identify the sources with multiple resistance and postulation of leaf rust resistance genes in some of the genotypes. Forty-five stocks showing multiple resistance were subjected to 8 genetically characterized leaf rust pathotypes to postulate resistance genes. Twelve genotypes were free from leaf and stripe rust, powdery mildew and loose smut. Thirteen stocks were free from leaf rust, stripe rust and powdery mildew, whereas 4 genotypes were free from leaf rust, stripe rust and loose smut. Four genotypes were free from stripe rust and powdery mildew, whereas 6 stocks were free from powdery mildew and leaf rust. Based on the differential interaction of 45 genotypes to 8 pathotypes of leaf rust, the pathotypes were postulated. Thirty-eight genotypes in group I showed resistance to all the pathotypes, except 77-1 indicating the presence of gene Lr 26.
