Mutagen induced polygenic variability in mungbean (Vigna radiata Wilczek L.).

Two varieties of mung bean were treated with ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) (0.1 and 0.2%), N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (NMU; 0.01 and 0.02%), hydroxylamine (0.06 and 0.07%) and gamma rays (30 and 40 kR). In the M2 and M3 observations on six characters were recorded for overall variance, interfamily variance and character means. All mutagen doses induced significant variability. Mean values showed a negative shift for most of the characters in the M2. Plants with desirable attributes were selected from M2families showing higher CV and mean values than the highest corresponding values from the respective control group of families. Selection in the M2 was effective as mean values in the M3 shifted in positive directions and in the M3 interfamily variancesincreased over corresponding M2 treatments. In the M3, along with the positive shift of mean values, both interfamily and overall variances were still significantly higher than the respective control values indicating scope for further selection and improvement of characters governed by polygenes. In the M5 yield trial, selected strains gave yields of up to 19.7 q/ha [1 quintal = 100 kg] against control yields of 12.2 q/ha. The study revealed that mutagenesis is a potent tool for the improvement of polygenic characters, provided large populations are raised and rigorous selection procedures are followed.
